Garlic Harvest

I wanted to post some pictures of the great garlic harvest from yesterdy evening. This started way back in October when with two friends, we planted 50 garlic cloves in my backyard garden area. Well, the weather has been crazy as everyone knows and not all of them survived, and I had already harvested six or seven small ones a couple of weeks ago. In total, I think we harvested around 25-30 garlic plants yesterday to divide between the three of us. I don't think they did as well or got as big as we were hoping for, except for four or five of them, but all in all it was a pretty low maintenance crop. We planted them, covered them in straw, I watered them a couple of times in the spring and that was it! Now the ones that we aren't using right away along with my friend's are hung up to dry in the garage.

Like I said above, maybe the garlic harvest wasn't quite as successful or big as any of us had hoped or had planned for, but we still got some garlic and that is something! You know it is not easy to grow your own food. I still I try though because of the obvious rewards that you can see, smell, and eat, and for the unseen rewards such as teaching patience, resilience, about the earth and soil, and even disappointment. After we get back from our trip in August (more to come about that soon) I think we will be able to put this garlic to use and enjoy the fruit of our harvest!

And of course, I am already thinking about the fall and how we can try to grow more and better garlic!

Okay, stay tuned for a post before we leave on our 4-week international trip next week about the tomatoes I am growing!
