I just wanted to say that Yena and I finally watched Barbie last night on Max (where you can currently watch it) and I liked it. I thought it was funny in parts (maybe a bit too silly), but towards the end it had a good message and had some depth. I would have liked to have seen more depth I think, but overall it was enjoyable.
I am not sure if I felt like the movie was emasculating because obviously the point of the movie was not about Ken or men. I think in some ways the ending about how Barbie tells Ken you need to figure out who you are and what you want to do with your life was interesting. In some ways, the movie was supposed to be somewhat of a satire to show how men throughout history have seen and viewed women (almost as an afterthought and women are just there to serve men and be enjoyed by men) and to show a bit of role and societal reversal at least seen in Barbie Land before things go haywire in the movie. As a man, I think that a part of me wishes that the men had more character depth in the movie, but once again have to realize it was a satire and throughout history there have been complaints and for good reason about the lack of character depth in women characters. So, this movie flipped that narrative, which I am going to go out on a limb and say that this was one of its goals. I do not think the movie was anti-man at all. In some ways shows the tactics that men have used throughout history to keep women "in their place" in the reverse, not to make men feel uncomfortable or emasculated, but to hopefully see how ridiculous and stupid these tactics look and how wrong it is to treat the other sex in this way.
So, there you have it, my review and thoughts on the movie Barbie.
Take care and until next time.
